1972 Rolex Red Submariner Date 1680 Mark IV Dial

$27,799.00

The Rolex Submariner Date reference 1680, widely recognized as the “Red Submariner,” is among the defining vintage sports watches from the brand’s history. This Mk IV example dates to approximately 1972, supported by its 3.09 million serial range, and offers a strong combination of desirable period details and authentic vintage wear.

The 40mm stainless steel case appears to be unpolished and maintains excellent proportions, with notably thick lugs and a strong overall presence. Fitted to the case is a highly sought-after Mk IV Feet First dial, identifiable by its red lettering on white and distinctive open “6” within the depth rating. The matte black dial remains in excellent vintage condition, while the original tritium lume has developed a warm, buttery patina. The original tritium hands remain fitted and show signs of oxidation consistent with age.

The watch retains its Fat Font bezel insert, which remains in very nice condition with a deep black appearance, toasty lume pip, and numerals that have faded to a subtle golden hue.

An original Rolex 9315 folded-link Oyster bracelet completes the watch. The bracelet features a 1-70 clasp code, dating it to January 1970, along with the correct 380 end links and dive extension. It retains 10 links and displays some stretch consistent with its age.

Overall condition is very nice for a watch of this vintage, with superficial scratching throughout the case and bracelet as well as minor dings along the sides of the case. There is also a ding on the second bracelet link on the 12 o’clock side. Taken as a whole, this is an honest and visually compelling Red Submariner with strong proportions, desirable period components, and plenty of the character that makes vintage examples so appealing.
