1972 Rolex Red Submariner Date 1680 Mark IV Dial
The reference 1680 Red Submariner holds a particularly important place in Rolex history. Introduced as the first Submariner with a date display, it is also uniquely recognized by its red model designation on the dial. Well-preserved and original examples are increasingly difficult to find, and this Mk IV example offers an especially appealing combination of period-correct details and honest vintage character.
This watch dates to approximately 1972, based on its 3.03 million serial number. Its 40mm stainless steel case has been previously polished but continues to retain strong, well-defined lugs and excellent overall proportions. Inside, the Mk IV matte black dial features the correct red “Submariner” signature, feet first depth rating, crisp printing, and open “6s.” The dial remains in excellent condition, with only an extremely minor area of lume loss on the minute track at 6 o’clock, noticeable only upon close inspection. The original tritium plots have aged to a warm, buttery patina, while the original matching tritium hands remain in place and show light oxidation consistent with the watch’s age.
A correct Mk 5.0 bezel insert surrounds the dial, featuring the desirable hooked “5.” The insert has developed an attractive blue-grey fade over time, giving the watch additional vintage character.
The watch is completed by a Rolex 9315 folded-link Oyster bracelet fitted with the correct 280 end links and dive extension. Its 2/72 clasp date code dates the bracelet to February 1972. The bracelet retains 10 links and shows moderate stretch consistent with decades of careful wear. The clasp retains a sharp, well-defined Rolex coronet and appears to be unpolished.
Recently serviced and running well, the watch presents in excellent vintage condition, with only light surface wear and minor dings consistent with responsible ownership. With its original dial, hands, period-correct insert, and properly dated bracelet, this Mk IV Red Submariner is a particularly attractive example of one of Rolex’s most iconic vintage sports watches.
