1966 Rolex Submariner 5513 Gilt Meters First Tropical 2-Line Dial
One of the most special watches we have ever had the opportunity to offer, this Rolex Submariner reference 5513 is an absolute knockout. Featuring a 1.26 million serial number, this example dates to 1966 and showcases a spectacular tropical gilt dial that has aged into a magnificent golden-brown tone and texture. The gilt printing is complemented by matching patina across the zinc sulfide-based luminous hour markers and handset, creating an exceptionally cohesive and beautifully aged appearance.
The original dial is particularly impressive, with its rich, naturally developed coloration and unmistakable vintage character. There is some minor lume loss, most notably at the 4 and 6 o’clock plots. Additionally, a very small area of the minute hand was stabilized using period-correct luminous material to prevent further deterioration. This leaves one tiny spot with a slightly lighter coloration.
The stainless steel case retains thick, even lugs and strong overall proportions. The original bezel insert remains in excellent condition, showing minimal wear. Completing the watch is its original Rolex 7206 riveted Oyster bracelet, displaying typical minor stretch, with 11 total links and a January 1966 (1/66) date stamp. The plexiglass crystal exhibits the expected signs of wear for a vintage example, including minor dings and surface scratches, while remaining in overall good condition.
What makes this example especially remarkable is its exceptionally rare original accessory set. Accompanying the watch are its original Rolex box, leather document holder, Oyster Perpetual Submariner 200 description card, card case, and original warranty papers dated June 15, 1966. Finding a vintage 5513 in this configuration is special enough; finding one accompanied by such an impressive collection of period-correct accessories makes it truly extraordinary.
