1978 Rolex Datejust Oysterquartz 36 - $9399
A true vintage icon with undeniable retro charm, this 1978 Rolex Oysterquartz Datejust 17013 MK1 captures the bold spirit of late-70s and early-80s luxury. Originally purchased in Brunei in January 1979 from The Borneo Company, this remarkable piece was later imported to Canada by the original owner, where it remained untouched in a safe for more than 25 years. Time has gracefully transformed the 18k gold, giving it a delicate purple hue — a rare oxidation seen only on well-preserved vintage examples.
The watch features a beautiful champagne dial with rich golden tones that play effortlessly with the light. This rare MK1 dial, produced only between 1977 and 1978, bears the distinctive “Oysterquartz” marking at 6 o’clock — a detail exclusive to the earliest production runs. Later MK2 versions display “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified.” The tritium hour markers are all intact and have developed a light patina over time.
The case is attached to its original Oysterquartz Jubilee bracelet in 18k yellow gold and stainless steel, maintaining its signature two-tone elegance. Inside beats the Rolex Caliber 5035, a groundbreaking quartz movement developed in-house. Designed to meet Rolex’s high standards of precision and durability, this movement remains one of the finest examples of quartz innovation in luxury watchmaking. Produced for 25 years in limited numbers, the Oysterquartz line remains a rare and collectible part of Rolex history. The case and bracelet of this watch appear unpolished and remain in good condition, with the exception of superficial scratching throughout the case, bezel, and bracelet. Accompanying the watch is its original green Rolex box, green hangtag, translation papers, original receipt from The Borneo Company, and guarantee papers dated in January of 1979.
