On October 3, 1962, the Speedmaster CK 2998 became the first OMEGA worn in space, when astronaut Walter Schirra took his personal watch aboard the Mercury Sigma 7 mission. This modern edition honors that milestone, blending second-generation Speedmaster design with contemporary updates.
The 39.7mm stainless steel case OMEGA Speedmaster First Omega In Space
Reference 310.30.40.50.06.001) features a mix of brushed and polished finishes, paired with a flat-links bracelet and OMEGA’s comfort-adjust system. A black aluminum bezel with the classic “Dot Over Ninety” frames a grey-blue CVD dial, inspired by original CK 2998 models and protected by a hesalite-style sapphire crystal.
Vintage details include Super-LumiNova indexes, Alpha hands, and a white baton seconds hand, with subdials for 30 minutes, 12 hours, and small seconds. A vintage OMEGA logo appears on the dial and crown, while the caseback bears the Seahorse medallion and “THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE – OCTOBER 3, 1962.”
Powered by the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861, it comes complete with boxes, booklets, cards, and accessories, as pictured. The preowned Speedy FOIS has an open card (unstamped, open date), was purchased November 23, 2024 from an authorized dealer, and it carries the balance of the factory warranty.
